Dearly beloved brothers and sisters
It is once again such a privilege to share of the
greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the beginning of his month we decided to go to
Licoma Island, close to the Mozambique coastline. On our way to Nkhata
Bay’s port we ran out of petrol 10 kilometers from our destination
due to some petrol stations without petrol. This place was God given.
People from everywhere came and we shared the Gospel for more than 2
hours while Jono got a lift with an ambulance, which charged more than
the local taxis, to buy some petrol at Nkhata Bay!
We left our vehicle, which has been named Bileam by
Dawie Steyn, at a backpacker accommodation in Nkhata Bay, where we shared
the Gospel and led some of the people to Christ. That night a minibus/
taxi came to pick us up to take us to the ferry. Oh boy was this a joy
ride! It was going uphill and downhill on the roughest terrain. The
seats were loose and we were just hanging on for dear life. As we arrived
at the little port, Jono tried to open the sliding door and was suddenly
standing with the door in his hands. This was quite embarrassing as
we tried to put the rusted door back on the vehicle.
We then left Malawi mainland on the ferry in first
class, which is lying on the open deck on the floor near a bar. (The
most inexpensive way of transport was to use the ferry that usually
takes 12 hours.) Len got in trouble when he started to take photos of
the ferry. People very aggressively came and persistently told us to
delete the photos! Malawian people don’t like people to take photos
of them, strange but true. We shared the Gospel with some tourists just
before we ‘hit the deck’.
The next morning a little boat took us to the backpackers
on the other side of the island. This was a paradise, although we slept
in straw huts. We, Len, Jono and Susan, then started to share the love
of Christ and reasoned with some of the tourists and the locals. The
people in this area were shocked to see white missionaries, for since
the existence of the backpackers, 11 years ago they have seen only one
couple that was reading their Bibles, but never shared the Gospel. Their
experience of white people is that they are always drinking, always
smoking drugs and that they have a free sex lifestyle. We then went
to the main village and had to climb a mountain and walk for kilometers
to reach the villages. Here we all ministered in the streets and handed
out tracts. We visited a Cathedral (the third biggest in Africa) and
then shared the Gospel with a lovely Dutch couple from Netherlands in
the Cathedral’s passageways. While sharing with them many catholic
nuns came to us to collect some tracts, because we gave a few tracts
and Len prayed for a few nuns while in the Cathedral. Later that day
some people invited Len to come preach at a secondary school.
Early the next morning we had to climb the mountain
again and walk that very tiring distance to the main village. Susan
went a separate way by the guidance of the Holy Spirit to minister to
a German lady that we met on the ferry. Len then ministered to the youth
in a very special and emotional way. The students responded so well
and more than eighty of the ‘more than a hundred’ students
gave their lives to Jesus. A pastor and a student came to the place
we were staying at to tell us that they did not have any missionaries
on the island in many years. The Jesus movie has never been shown on
this island of 6000 inhabitants and we pray that we might go back to
show the Jesus movie as well as the Passion of the Christ. Sponsors
have supplied the Projector to do this and we desperately need Sound
Equipment to show the film.
We waited for the ferry for 12 hours from 2’o
clock in the afternoon. When we started off in the small boat at 8’o
clock at night, the waves were quite high and rough. We silently prayed
and commanded the waters to be calm. 5 minutes later the lake was calm.
This was truly a miracle. Then we had to sleep on the beach with many
of the locals on a very chilly evening. Later the ferry finally came.
We then got back to the mainland.
Jono was very ill in bed the day after we got back.
We prayed for many hours and the next morning Jono was fine. We then
went to a Bible School, Sola Scriptura, close to Mzuzu. We all had the
opportunity to preach and teach to the students. Later we left for Lilongwe
to say bye to Susan at the airport.
We then went back to Senga Bay where we felt the urge
to separate ourselves for a week of prayer and fasting. That week was
very special as the Holy Spirit dealt with us about our prayer life
as well as ministering more and more to the sick. Even in this period,
God still sent some tourists on our way with who we shared the Gospel.
We have met a couple of missionary groups and have
spent the last couple of days fixing ‘Bileam’ and awaiting
David, Len’s other son to join us.
We desire to fulfill the call of Mark 16:15
to “Go onto the entire world and preach the Gospel” and
we also desire for you to fulfill that call as well. Your donation will
aid us as we preach the Gospel in remote and unreached areas, impact
others who will in turn impact others who will impact all generations
worldwide with the truth and power of the Gospel. All gifts, great or
small, will be appreciated.
